Sometimes the competition on Pay Per Click is just too much. When you need to get that extra edge, spy tools are your friend. Here’s how to use one such tool to spy on your PPC competitors for free.

A great tool to spy on your Pay Per Click (PPC) competitors is KeywordSpy. This tool has a massive database of keywords and ads which is constantly updated and expanded. Here’s how you can get this valuable data and use it for your own campaigns.

Getting Started
To start using KeywordSpy you don’t even need an account, but having one is better because you get access to features such as exporting ads formatted for importing in PPC search engines like Google and Bing. To get a free trial account, just go to keywordspy.com and click the Free Trial link. Complete the sign-up process, and once you are logged in your account, you can start spying on ads. You can do this by searching the various components of a PPC ad: Domains, Keywords, Destination URLs, and Ad Copies. You also need to select your market, for example you could do a search for the US market, or the UK, among other countries. This is important because each market is different, composed of different competitors and different products.

Spying on keywords
The easiest way to start is to spy for keywords. For example you can type in “weight loss” and immediately find out what the top sites are. From there you can click on a site and see which keywords it has been bidding on. You can even see the actual PPC ads they’ve been using, and Cost Per Click (CPC) for both keywords and ads, which gives you an estimate on how expensive it will be to enter a particular market.

Profiting from your competitors
KeywordSpy also allows you to sort keywords and ads by ROI, which is a simple measure of how many times a keyword or ad has been seen since the first time Keywordspy detected it, to the last time it was seen. Obviously the more a keyword or ad is displayed, the higher the probability it’s a winner, because no one would reasonably let a keyword or ad run for much time if it’s not making money.

As a free member to KeywordSpy you have a limit to the amount of keywords and ads you can see, but this is still a great way to get more insight into your market, allowing you to profit from your competitors spending on PPC ads. You just go there and copy the best ads and keywords, which gives you huge advantage in starting PPC campaigns, specially if you don’t have much experience or money to spend on testing.

This is just an introduction to the art of spying your PPC competitors, and here’s a final piece of advice: don’t copy the ads, but extract the main ideas and make your own ads. This way you learn to think in terms of your customer, and who knows, you might get your ads to perform even better than the ones you’ve been spying on.

If you’re an affiliate, Google HATES you.
This is important, so read on.

What if all your affiliate income suddenly got… switched off?
If everything you’ve been working towards for months (or years!)
was destroyed without any explanation or any reason?

Well Google has been doing that lately to many affiliates.
The Big G are slaying Adwords accounts left, right and centre.
And when they decide to screw you… there’s no coming back.
I know personally… it happened to me. They banned me!

NO TIME TO READ? CLICK BELOW (THIS IS FOR NEWBIES!)

==> http://www.juan-pablo.name/go/PPC-Revenge
(try to close the page for a $10 discount)

Now I’m obviously going to promote a solution to you.
However, I’d like you to get this clear first, so I’m gonna repeat:

THIS IS FOR NEWBIES

If you’re used to PPC, you probably don’t need this guide.
You can figure it out easily.

Actually, even if you don’t know a thing about PPC
and affiliate marketing, you can figure this out on your own.
Setting up an account with Microsoft Adcenter,
Google’s biggest rival, is no rocket science.
Setting up ad tracking isn’t too hard as well.

However, the details could take you between a few days,
to a few months to figure out, depending on your
level of experience.

HERE’S HOW TO GET GOING TODAY

This guy named Jacobo bounced back from his Adwords ban
and created a six figure income from scratch in a few days.

His guide is really short and simple, but maybe that’s
where its power lies. A newbie can read this, watch the videos
and start advertising on Adcenter in probably just a few hours.

Here’s how he did it:

==> http://www.juan-pablo.name/go/PPC-Revenge
(try to close the page for a $10 discount)

See, Jacobo was cozy… maybe too cozy… with his Google
income. But when Jacobo woke up one day to see
he was the latest victim of Google’s death-hand…
he wasn’t gonna take it lying down.

Find out what he did… and how Google destroying his business
was the best thing that ever happened to him…

==> http://www.juan-pablo.name/go/PPC-Revenge
(try to close the page for a $10 discount)

Talk soon,

Juan-Pablo

P.S.: This is no joke… how long are you going to wait
before Google exterminates your account and you’re left with
nothing but hatred for their “do no evil” motto?
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, check out this faster,
cheaper, more targeted alternative…

==> http://www.juan-pablo.name/go/PPC-Revenge
(try to close the page for a $10 discount)

Even if you don’t buy the guide, consider this a fair warning.
Google closed my Adwords account. You could be next.
In a lot of cases, they ban affiliates for no clear reason…
so you better be ready for it, than sorry!

Yesterday I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to do a PHP redirect from my PPC ads to my affiliate links, while still passing the keyword for conversion tracking.

Why did I bother? Because I was promoting a merchant from XY7 which doesn’t allow affiliates to show their URL on PPC ads. Since I didn’t want to create a landing page, I figured I would snag a domain name and just redirect the offer through it. I could then use my new domain’s URL as the display/destination URL for my Yahoo ads. Even though I have a love/hate relationship with Yahoo, I didn’t bother doing this on AdWords, since they frown upon affiliate redirects.

I thought this would be relatively easy, say, do a google search and get the code I need. Wrong! The code I needed was nowhere to be found. Even though I used to know some programming from my unfinished IT career, I had never coded PHP. So I had to use the old trial and error to come up with the damn code. After some 2-4 hours I finally got something that worked. So here it is:

<?php

$keyword = $_GET['ovkey'];

$URL = “http://redirect.tracking202.com/dl/XXXXXXX?t202kw=”.$keyword;

header(“Location: $URL”) ;

?>

This is using Tracking202, but it should work with any tracking solution that appends keywords in some way. The part after the ? sign should include the keyword variable name (in Tracking202 it’s ‘t202kw’). The ‘ovkey’ on the GET method is used to get the keyword from Yahoo’s tracking system (I think it stands for OVerture KEY).

In order for this to work you need to have tracking enabled on your Yahoo Search Marketing account. Yahoo appends the keyword (the ‘ovkey’) automatically to the end of the URL, which the code above grabs and appends into your tracking URL. So on your Yahoo ads you would just put the URL for the page holding your PHP redirect into the destination/display URL fields.

This code should also work for Adwords or MSN. In Adwords you would have to use dinamic keyword insertion to grab the keyword and pass it to your redirect page. To do that, make your destination URL like this on Adwords:

http://www.yourtrackingpage.com/trackingpagename.php?kw={Keyword:no keyword}

You would also have to change the ‘ovkey’ on the tracking page to ‘kw’, or whatever variable name you used on your Adwords URL.

I don’t know how tracking works on MSN because I have never used, so you will have to look it up. It should be very similar – just change what needs to be changed, probably just the dynamic keyword insertion code. The important thing is the process: have the PPC ad append the keyword to your tracking page URL, and then have your page grab the keyword, append it to your tracking link and send visitors on their merry way.

Hope that makes sense. Now if Yahoo would just aprove my ads before Valentine’s day…
